How To Camp Safely Without Cell Service

Do you like to go out camping as a family? We have a couple of times, and it can be very fun, but it has its difficulties for a techy family!

Camping often comes with a price when talking about cell phones. What I mean by that is minimal or no cell service. While the break from technology can be amazing and rewarding, it also comes with some fear.

We received goTenna for review.

You can eliminate that fear with goTenna. The goTenna is an off grid communication tool. No towers, routers or satellites are required. Simply connect your iPhone or Android phone to a goTenna and your camping communication improves dramatically. Now you can text and share location with other goTenna users even without any existing cellular service.

What is goTenna?

goTenna is a perfect device for camping, skiing, crowds, off grid communication and more. When you buy a goTenna, you get 2 units which connect together to form their own network.

This means that even while you are camping you can still feel safe knowing where your family is. Maybe the family splits up on a hiking trail. Have no fear; you can still communicate with your partner goTenna. Receive and send text messages for free, share your location on a detailed offline map (you must download it before your adventure).

goTenna has a rechargeable battery which is good for 20+ hours of use. It communicates with a 2 watt VHF radio and Bluetooth. goTenna also comes with an emergency beacon and a flash memory good for 100’s of messages. To cap it off, your goTenna is made for the outdoors, it is water resistant and dust-tight.

What can you do with a goTenna

The uses for a goTenna are quite impressive. A pair (or more) of units offer off grid communication while camping or anything else outdoors. This off grid communication is great for skiing, hiking, climbing, kayaking and pretty much anything you can think of outdoors. When you hear what the goTenna can do, I automatically think of the outdoors, but there is another amazing usage for it too.

How many times have you been in a big crowd and not had any cell service. Think of a football game, a huge parade, or Mardi Gras. Have you ever been in a crowd and your phone is worthless? Well goTenna will still allow you to communicate even in these large crowds.

I wish I had the goTenna for this awesome skiing & adventure trip to Colorado.

How far is the goTenna’s range?

While you are camping outdoors, your goTenna can safely expect a 4 mile range, with a recorded record of 26 miles! For a congested, crowded area (like a football game) your goTenna has a range of over a half mile.

Remember, this is done with no cell service; the goTenna creates your own personal network for off grid communication.

The goTenna is an incredible device, and also has a new partner, the goTenna Mesh can do everything the goTenna can do, and more. It is able to use other goTenna Mesh units to create an even wider reach. Other Mesh units work together to pass the signal along with encrypted technology. Now as the goTenna family grows, so does your ability to communicate even further and further away from each other.

You can purchase the goTenna and the goTenna Mesh for your next camping trip on Amazon and on the goTenna site. Your off grid communication will be reliable and I would love to see all the extra usage options you can come up with!

Hey there! I’m Tesa, the mom behind 2 Wired 2 Tired. The blog got its name because we have two kids born a year apart and my husband, Dave, and I always joked that "the kids were too wired and we were too tired!" :)

Fast forward a bit—now the kids are off to college (how did that happened so fast!) and since 2009, I’ve been blogging through the chaos, coffee in hand, finding the best in family, travel, and tech—because honestly, who has time for bad gadgets and boring trips?

So, whether you're searching for family travel inspiration, tech gadgets, or tips to enhance family life, you're in the right place because the fun (and the coffee) is always brewing around here!
