Thank you to Vicks & ZzzQuil for sponsoring this post. The honest opinions are my own.
One of my goals is to see the world. At least to see as many parts of it that I possibly can. When I’m not traveling, I love to daydream about trips and plan vacations. I often think I may have been a travel agent in a past life! The good news is Dave loves to travel too and we enjoy being able to spend time together on the road or in the sky.
Even though I love to travel with all of my heart, one of the most difficult things to deal with when being away from home is not sleeping in your own bed. It’s frustrating when you’re on the trip of your dreams and you’re exhausted during the day because you just aren’t sleeping well at night.
Since sleeping well is important to being able to enjoy every minute of a dream vacation I put together these 5 travel hacks that help you sleep better while on the go.
Sound Machine App
There are many apps out there that can play various noises that act like a sound machine. I set one on my phone at home and use it every night. When I am traveling and getting ready to go to sleep, I’ll set it to play the same sound. Since it’s a familiar sound and one that I use at night at home, I find it relaxing and it helps me fall asleep more quickly. It is also great for blocking external noise – if your hotel room is near a busy intersection or a noisy elevator, turning on a sound machine app can help drown out the noise and help you get a good night’s sleep.
Eye Mask
Honestly, when I’m home I’m someone who could sleep all day with no problem. Back in college I often didn’t wake up until 2 in the afternoon! Hence the name 2 Wired 2 Tired. However, when I’m traveling if there is a curtain that doesn’t close completely and just the tiniest sliver of light gets through, I’m immediately wide awake and can’t get back to sleep. It’s so frustrating. That’s why an eye mask is a big help. It keeps things dark when you need it to be and perfect for an afternoon cat nap when you are struggling with jet lag as well.
A Good Old Fashioned Book
These days we’re constantly connected to our phones, our tablets, our laptops, and even our smartwatches. There isn’t much downtime anymore. Even when we could be on the dream vacation of a lifetime, we still find ourselves checking emails, returning calls from the boss, handling customer concerns, and sometimes having to put out work fires over the phone instead of laying under a palm tree sipping a fruity drink with an umbrella in it. That’s why I love to bring an old fashioned book with me. It’s so relaxing to put away all the electronics at night and get wrapped up in a good book. It’s a great way to spend the last few minutes of the day and can really make you feel like you are on vacation, to flip pages, and slowly drift off to sleep.
Go For A Swim, Take A Shower, Have A Bath…
If you really want to get a good night’s sleep, go for a swim and then take a shower or bath, and then hop into bed. Or skip the swim and just take a shower and call it a night. Showering before bed removes the travel dust from the day as well as any allergens which all might impede your sleep. It can also be a relaxing way to unwind after a long day of travel which is sure to help you sleep better. It’s a simple way to improve your sleep while on the go which can only lead to a more enjoyable time when you are awake.
Get your Zzz’s
I was interested to read that ZzzQuil is a non-habit forming sleep aid for the relief of occasional sleepiness, that helps you fall asleep easily, sleep soundly, and wake refreshed. When traveling it can be helpful to have ZzzQuil on hand so that a change in your environment doesn’t interrupt your sleep cycle. I can remember many nights while traveling that I wished I had something like this on my nightstand!
These travel hacks will help you sleep better while you are on the go. Whether you are in a room with a lumpy bed, have the band from the hotel wedding reception as your next door neighbors, are dealing with a time change, or just have a hard time sleeping due to the change in routine and environment, you can try out one or all of these travel hacks and hopefully you’ll be able to get a good night’s sleep and can fully enjoy the rest of your vacation.
