Books Children's Books Family

Word Of Mouse

Thank you to JIMMY Patterson books for sponsoring this post and providing the prize packs. The honest opinions are my own.

Kora and Logan are quite the little bookworms. They can get lost in a good book for ages. In fact, I can’t count the number of times we’ve had to say to Logan, “No reading while you are walking!”  Now that’s something I never thought I’d say as a parent! He can get so engrossed in a book that when he has to do something or go somewhere, instead of putting the book down, he just stands up and walks slowly to where he needs to go, meanwhile Dave and I start cringing knowing he’s going to trip over something and crash into something else! So we have to tell him to put the book down and pay attention to where he’s going.

And Kora can read for hours on end. It’s not uncommon for her to get a giant book from the library and sit and have it finished it just 2-3 days.

It makes me so happy that they kids love to read and that’s why I’m excited about James Patterson’s newest illustrated middle grade novel, Word of Mouse for ages 8-12 coming out on December 12th.

Word Of Mouse BookIt’s a book about a sky blue colored mouse named Isiah, who can read and write. He can also talk to humans – if any of them are willing to listen! He makes a dramatic escape from a mysterious laboratory and his family has gone missing. (Sidenote: Did you know a mouse family is called a mischief?). Isiah has to use his special skills to survive the outdoors and hopefully find his missing family. He has quite a journey coming across cruel cats, hungry owls, and terrified people. Then he comes across an equally unusual and lonely human girl named Hailey and soon they learn that true friendship can transcend all barriers.

I also have to mention that this book is co-authored with Chris Grabenstein which thrilled Kora & Logan. They love his books and are always on pins and needles waiting for the next one to come out.

I was also interested to learn that James Patterson received the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community at the 2015 National Book Awards. A tireless champion of the power of books and reading, he has created a new children’s book imprint, JIMMY Patterson, whose mission is simple: “We want every kid who finishes a JIMMY Book to say, ‘PLEASE GIVE ME ANOTHER BOOK.’”

James PattersonWe’ve received a copy of Word of Mouse and Kora & Logan can’t wait to read it! I paged through quite a bit of it and fell in love with Isiah and his adventures had me turning the page wanting to know what happens next.

I also really like that each chapter has Words To Live By from Isiah. A few include:

  • It’s very important to have something to do, something to love, and something to hope for
  • A mouse wrapped up in himself makes a very small package
  • No team works without teamwork

We thought it would be fun to share a few of our favorite family Words To Live By:

I love this! As the grandma now, I have some years to look back on. The most important parts of motivating or comforting or just “liking” oneself are the words we carry around in our heads. Something like “you can do/be anything is not enough (and is not true.) Better to have words like “I am strong” “We can do this together.” I love a book that will reinforce *good words* in a child’s mind.
