Smart Home Tech

Do You Want a Smart Home? Take the First Step With MyQ

Smart phones are all the rage and I love everything you can do with them. You can do the obvious, like email, internet, use it as a planner, pay bills and many more things. One of the most intriguing and growing aspects of using your smart phone is how it can integrate with your home if you have any type of smart home technology.

Chamberline MyQ

Chamberlain MyQ Garage System received.

When you hear smart phone, the first thing that comes to mind (at least to me) is a pricey system and a nicer and newer home. Well that’s not necessarily the case anymore. I’m excited to work with Chamberlain to receive their myQ system for review.

The Chamberlain and review their MyQ Garage System is a very easy to install and inexpensive (under $130) way to take the first step towards making your home a smart home and the envy of your neighbors!

The MyQ Garage is made up of 2 components that you install near your opener and on your door, they work together to keep track of whether or not your garage door is open and also give you the ability to open and close your garage door from your phone with the MyQ app – available for iPhone and Android.

This setup gives you a taste of what is possible with technology and will leave you wanting for more in regards to making your home a complete – or at least more of a – smart home. So the MyQ is a great starter system or a base and then you can add from there.

The MyQ system works with multiple popular smart home systems, like Nest, Wink and Apples’ Home Kit. So when you start with the MyQ, you have many options to grow your smart home from there.

Why should you buy the MyQ? In my opinion, there are 2 main priceless reasons:

–          Have you ever left home, either for work or a vacation, gotten about 20 minutes away, and have your stomach drop with the thought “did I close the garage door?” Even though you are positive you did, there is that lingering doubt, now you can simply glance at your phone and confirm it’s closed, or if you did forget, close it with the touch of a button.

–          Secondly, there are times that you may need to let someone into your home, instead of giving them a key that can be copied or lost, simply open your garage door to let them in. Nice and simple and no worries of losing that key.

MyQ is compatible with almost every garage door opener manufactured in 1993 or more recent (ours is pretty old, and it still connected and works great). Another neat feature is that you can set up your MyQ to send emails or notifications to your phone based on Rules that you create, like when the door is open for too long, or whenever it opens or closes, simply another great way to monitor and make sure everything is as it should be.

Overall the MyQ Garage is a really interesting system, nice and easy to use and install and it will lead you to a bunch of other smart home possibilities. I would recommend this for anyone who has ever had that fear of “did I leave the garage door open???”  This is a perfect and relatively inexpensive solution to that problem and many more.

When is that last time you wondered if your door was left open?

This would be perfect! I can not even begin to count how many times we have had to turn around and check our garage door. :)

what a great invention! love the idea of opening the door when I’m not home. I had a situation where I had to take my Mom to emergency room and my son didnt have a key to get in the house. what peace of mine this would have given me. will look into it THANKS

Hey there! I’m Tesa, the mom behind 2 Wired 2 Tired. The blog got its name because we have two kids born a year apart and my husband, Dave, and I always joked that "the kids were too wired and we were too tired!" :)

Fast forward a bit—now the kids are off to college (how did that happened so fast!) and since 2009, I’ve been blogging through the chaos, coffee in hand, finding the best in family, travel, and tech—because honestly, who has time for bad gadgets and boring trips?

So, whether you're searching for family travel inspiration, tech gadgets, or tips to enhance family life, you're in the right place because the fun (and the coffee) is always brewing around here!
