Kids Can Power Up & Read With The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge

Thank you to Scholastic for sponsoring this post. The honest opinions are my own.

This time of year I start looking for activities and ways to prevent Kora & Logan from suffering from the dreaded “summer slide.” Last year we did the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge and we were so impressed by the motivation, creativity, and inspiration involved in the program that I’m excited to share that we will be doing it again this year!

Scholastic Summer ReadingThis program is fantastic and lots of fun for kids. It encourages them to read and to log their minutes each day online. When they meet their weekly goal they unlock stories and earn rewards. Kora and Logan found this so much fun last year that they couldn’t wait to hop on the computer and register as soon as possible again this year.

I’m also excited about the printables. They are very encouraging.

Scholastic Summer Reading Inspiration

Scholastic Summer Reading LogWe are a family of bookworms but even so we’d love to raise our reading goals this summer. I often find that I only read 5-10 minutes before bed and I’d like to increase that to at least a half an hour. Dave prefers to read sports articles rather than books but at least it is reading and I know he is trying to get back into reading books and has made that this goal this summer. Kora and Logan are the best readers of all of us.

They read anywhere from 10 – 30 minutes before bed and often read while eating meals or after school when they can’t wait to see what happens next. Since they won’t have to go to bed so early in the summer, they want to bump up their reading goals to an hour a day for 4-5 days a week. I think they can do it. They do love to read!

Scholastic Summer ReadingI was excited to see that Scholastic has joined together with Energizer to power the Summer Reading Challenge and encourage families to find innovative ways to discover the power and joys of reading. Through the Summer Reading Challenge kids can read all summer long and unlock 12 original short stories by bestselling children’s authors.

There’s also a fantastic Energizer Instant Win Game:

Energizer® and Scholastic are partnering to create the “Power the Possibilities” campaign which gives moms the tools they need to unlock their child’s talents, fuel their ambitions and set them up for future success. Starting May 4, 2015, parents can buy any specially marked pack of Energizer® brand batteries to scratch for a chance to win one of thousands of prizes that will power discovery and learning.

Prizes include a family trip to New York City, a Scholastic Study Corner Makeover, a tablet with Scholastic apps, a library of Scholastic books and more! Everyone who plays can also download free digital stories for their family.

Reading is a love that lasts a lifetime. I myself am a reader sometmes too much- I will want to read just one more chapter and stay up way too late.
I love the scholastic program, it keeps kids sharp and improves their lives. Its good the kids are still doing it, and the program has adapted over the years.

it is a great idea to keep kids learning and using their minds during summer. It can big difference giving them extra incentive too

Hey there! I’m Tesa, the mom behind 2 Wired 2 Tired. The blog originally got its name because my husband, Dave, and I had two kids born a year apart. Back then, we always joked that “the kids were too wired and we were too tired.”

Fast forward to today—those two kids are navigating college life (how did that happen so fast?!), and our house is a little quieter. But the story didn't stop there. Now that I'm a 50+ mom and an empty nester-in-training, the definition of 2 Wired 2 Tired has evolved.

Today I'm wired for new adventures, Disney magic, smart technology, and unforgettable travel experiences and I’m completely tired of bad gadgets, boring trips!

Whether you're a midlife mom looking for the ultimate 50+ Disney World guide, planning a relaxing Michigan Lake Life getaway, organizing a college dorm packing list, or just looking for a killer recipe to enjoy with a great book, you're in the right place.

The chaotic toddler years might be behind us, but the fun (and the coffee) is always brewing around here. Let's tackle this next exciting chapter together!
