7 Reasons Not To Miss The Detroit Kite Festival

If you love kites then Belle Isle is the place to be in the summer. The Detroit Kite Festival takes place in July. It’s the perfect place to hold an event like this because the island has plenty of open fields and often has a slight breeze to keep those kites flying. We look forward to this event every summer and that’s why I’m excited to share with you these 7 reasons not to miss the Detroit Kite Festival.

7 Reasons Not To Miss The Detroit Kite Festival - 2 Wired 2 Tired

Professional Kite Flying Team

Detroit Kite Festival Windjammers

The professional kite flying team is incredible! They catch your eye right from the moment you arrive on the island with their amazing stunts and choreographed routines. We often find ourselves entranced watching the show and wondering how they don’t crash into each other!

Here’s a video of them in action:

Kite Repair Tent

It’s no fun to go to a kite festival and have your kite break, but there’s help at the Detroit Kite Festival. Just take your kite over to the Kite Repair Tent and they’ll have you fixed up and flying again in no time!

Detroit Institute of Arts DIY Kite Making

Have you or your kids ever wanted to make your own kite? This is the perfect place to do so. The Detroit Institute of Arts sets up a booth and gives you the tools and instructions you need to make your very own kite. So much fun and what a wonderful memory!

Will It Fly?

Another fun booth to visit is Will It Fly? They provide all kinds of materials and you can make all kinds of different kite creations and see if they will fly. It’s such a great way to combine imagination, science, and fun all in one place.

Food Trucks

There’s always a variety of great food to look forward to at the Detroit Kite Festival. Last year some of the food trucks included: Motor City Franks, Dos Los Tacos, Mity Nice, Carolyn’s Kitchen, Simply Spanish, Milkster Nitro Ice Cream and many more. It’s fun ordering the wide variety of food and enjoying it outdoors on a beautiful summer day. And Belle Isle is always the perfect place for a picnic.

Music & Entertainment

There’s lots of wonderful music during the festival too. They have a stage set up and a great list of musical groups and singers that play throughout the day. They add some fun to the atmosphere and put an extra groove in your step as you are enjoying the kite flying fun.

Just Plain Fun

If you still need a reason to go, the best one is that it’s just plain fun. It’s a good excuse to get the kids off their phones, off the couch, and outside enjoying a beautiful summer day.

Where else can you make and fly your own kite, get it fixed if it breaks, enjoy a performance from a professional kite flying team, as well as good music and good food?

The Detroit Kite Festival is a wonderful event that provides a lot of smiles, laughs, and photo opportunities along the way. It’s one of our favorite area summer events that offers good old-fashioned family fun and the opportunity to make long-lasting memories together.

Hey there! I’m Tesa, the mom behind 2 Wired 2 Tired. The blog got its name because we have two kids born a year apart and my husband, Dave, and I always joked that "the kids were too wired and we were too tired!" :)

Fast forward a bit—now the kids are off to college (how did that happened so fast!) and since 2009, I’ve been blogging through the chaos, coffee in hand, finding the best in family, travel, and tech—because honestly, who has time for bad gadgets and boring trips?
